Design Dysphoria: Give Them the Fantasy marked the first truly immersive exhibition at Gotham Goods, transforming the space into a lush, atmospheric environment where design, identity, and embodiment intertwined. Curated by Studio S II, Grace Whiteside, and Liz Collins, the show brought together a bold constellation of queer designers whose works push the boundaries of what functional objects can express.
The exhibition invited visitors into a world where fantasy operates not as illusion, but as a radical design strategy, a way of rewriting narratives, expanding pleasure, and asserting new aesthetic possibilities. Sculptural furniture, lighting, textiles, and hybrid objects were arranged as a full-body experience, blurring the line between gallery, stage, and dreamscape. The work and environemnt carefully created encouraged audiences to move differently, feel differently, and imagine differently within the space.
Give Them the Fantasy established Design Dysphoria as a vital force in contemporary queer designL a movement centered on celebration of fluid identites, gender spectulation, imagination, and the unapologetic pursuit of personal mythology. The show became show destination for collectors, architects, and creatives seeking work that refuses neutrality and instead embodies desire, agency, and the right to craft one’s own fantasy.
